It's been a while. A long time on the web is six months, so this has been a lifetime in coming. However I have been toying with wireframes and concepts for longer than I care, or even, want to remember.
My last blog post was back in 2007 and a lot has happened since then. So where do I start? Well, I'm a little older, a little wiser, as Wayne Campbell in Waynes World would say. I'm also due to get married this year too. Along with this I'm now working for myself. A prospect that has always intrigued me and after three months, it's a dream job. I am planning on posting an entry soon after this one of the pros and cons of working as a freelancer in the design industry. So for now, I will just say that it's been fantastic.
So back onto the subject of the new website. I must have designed and tossed so many design concepts when working on this personal project. Some designs were simply shocking, some could have easily been another man's gold. Ah the temptation to put up some screenshots for you guys, but I think I may leave that for a later date.
I have spoken to many of my fellow web designers on the subject of the personal website, and it's a reoccurring theme that when it comes to pixel pushing for yourself as opposed to a client, it can be a long time in coming when you're truly satisfied. I spent many hours creating concepts that were in fact very good, but did it reflect me? Did it represent my style? Hell no. But patience is a virtue, and I knew that "click" moment would come. And it did. In fact, this particular design happened within such a short space of time. But you hear that all the time. I think it only took Bob Dylan 15 minutes to compose and write "Knockin' on Heaven's Door". But once I had a design that I felt represented me, and one that a week later I wasn't bored of, I knew it was time.
I will go into greater detail the process behind the design and development of westfourstreet in another blog post. I will also display previous concepts and wireframes too. But right now, I have a long list of client work that I need to be complete. Also there is the small matter of the World Cup too.
In future entries I will be discussing not only web design and development, but I will also be writing on a more personal level. I have a few gigs that I am attending soon and anyone who knows me will tell you that I have a huge passion for music. Put me in a room with a bass, a guitar and drums and there is a good chance this guy will be smiling. So a more personal approach will be seen.
I will be running the site on the back of the world class, and much loved CMS, Expression Engine shortly. So your comments will have to wait for a week or so whilst I make some last minute tweaks. But right now, I just wanted this damn thing up and running.
But I sincerely hope you enjoy browsing westfourstreet. The effort, on a personal front has been worth it. I have the site that I wanted.
